Poet Satchidanandan to deliver Thuchan Memorial Lecture, 2016

Famous poet Shri K. Satchidanandan will deliver this year’s Thunchan Memorial Lecture at Guru Madam, Thekkegramam, Chittur at 1030 am on the 27th of November, 2016. Satchidanandan is a pioneer of modern poetry in Malayalam and has played a very important role in ensuring that the voice of poetry is always raised in support of the poor and downtrodden. His writings against authoritarian and oppressive regimes are well known and in these times when India is staring at a return to a dark period in our history, wherein civil rights are curtailed, freedom of speech frowned upon and intellectualism jeered upon, we feel that Satchidanandan is indeed the right person to deliver the annual lecture that is being conducted in the name of the founding father of Malayalam language. After all, Thunchan was instrumental in bringing our epics to the language of the common man, thus moving it forever from the citadels and custody of the elite. Please do join us at Guru Madam at 1030 am on the 27th of November to listen our famous bard.

Abhay Sahoo to inaugurate the 7th Panchajanyam International Film Festival

Chittur, Jan 28, 2014: It is in keeping wth the realisation and awareness that coexistence with and not an onslaught on nature is what is the need for the hour, that Panchajanyam chose "Fading Greeneries" as the theme for its 7th Panchajanyam International Film Festival. Our uncontrolled desire for "development" is often a one-sided affair of handing over the natural riches of a country and a people, on a platter to some deep-pocketed corporate. The people resist this and there are many movements across the country on various such issues. We realise that it is imperative for a film society with social commitment, to recognise and support such struggles. It is in this backdrop that we are happy to announce that Shri Abhay Sahoo, the leader of the Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti, will inaugurate the Film Festival on Feb 7th, 2014 at The Chittur.

Dr. Saradakkutty speaks out at PIFF, Day Two (Jan 23rd)

At the Panchajanyam International Film Festival today, Dr. S. Saradakutty presented a paper on “Evolution of women characters in Malayalam cinema“. It was an in-depth dissertation on the plight of the Keralite woman as depicted in the silver screen and the total sidelining thereof. This has led to a relegation of women, “women oriented” stories and women audience to the TV and alienated them from mainstream cinema, said Dr. Saradakutty. Most movie directors have desisted from projecting woman and woman politics in the right light, yielding to the temptation of “classifiying” them into well-accepted cubicles, with the notable exceptions of KG George and Padmarajan. She spoke eloquently on the subject and a lively discussion followed with the well attended audience, led by the news co-ordinator, Mr. Mangad Ratnakaran.

The screenings today were “Abu according to Janaki”, “To Live”, “Pan’s Labyrinth”, “Nammalenda Ingane”, “Ezhuthaatha kathukal”, “Harischandrachi Factory” and “Rithu”. The movies all had the common theme of the dispossessed and the disillusioned, who try to balance and find meaning in their existence.
